A common quote in the sports industry is that, "it's not about what you know, but who you know." Like any other industry, the sports industry is very big on connecting with other people. In the age where we live in now, that is easier than ever due to the Internet and its great platforms for communication.
Today I want to provide some helpful tips for networking. Although these can be used in every industry, these are more specific for the sports and entertainment industry.
Do you have any more suggestions? Leave a comment below. If not, let's get started!
Why should you Network?
As an introvert, this is a question I always asked myself. Why reach out to people in the first place? It can easily turn into my worst nightmare: talking to people in a room filled with hundreds of others. That's actually a big reason why I didn't like going to conferences or sporting events - that was, of course, before I fell in love with sports.
Now that I fell in love with sport media, I quickly found out that this aspect of my life would have to change. I had to find ways to reach out to people in a way that I would still be comfortable and authentic to myself. But why? Why is it important?
Opportunities for Career Advancement: Networking gives you access to job opportunities, career advice, and even the ability to find mentors. Building relationships with the professionals in your industry can lead to referrals, promotions, and even new career prospects.
Knowledge Sharing & Learning: Networking also allows you to exchange ideas, insights, and the best practices with others in your field. You can learn from their experiences, gain new perspectives, and stay updated on industry trends and developments.
For example, a couple of months ago I went to my first conference. The Black Sports Business Symposium was my first ever appearance at any type of conference, let alone sports. It was such a great opportunity to hangout with my classmates, to meet other like-minded people, and to connect with industry professionals.
Increased Visibility & Recognition: By connecting with others in your industry, you can raise your profile and may even become known within it or within your community. This, of course, can be really helpful when seeking opportunities as you may become a reference by building a strong professional network to enhance your reputation and increase your visibility among your peers, potential employers, and future clients.
Access to Resources & Support: Networking also allows you to have a wide range of resources, which can range from information all the way to contacts and support networks. Whether you need advice, referrals to jobs, or assistance with a project you may be working on, your network can offer great resources and support for those plans.
Personal Growth & Development: Networking is also a great tool that encourages personal growth because it exposes you to new ideas, challenges, and opportunities. By interacting with different individuals, you can expand your horizons, improve your communication skills, and even get a confidence boost.
Building Long-Lasting Relationships: Although it is a great professional tool, networking also gives you the opportunity to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships. I have met some of my greatest friends in the sport industry by reaching out to them on social media or talking to them during events, and these are people that I can chat with about just anything. By cultivating these strong relationships with your colleagues and mentors, you can ensure that you'll have ongoing support and opportunities throughout your career.
Business Opportunities & Partnerships: One of the most common reasons as to why people practice networking is because of the chances that it may lead to new business opportunities, partnerships, and collaborations with others within your industry. Conferences, for example, are a great location to find potential clients, investors, and even business partners that are passionate about the same things that you are!
Staying Updated on Industry Trends: Another benefit to networking is that it allows you to stay informed about any new industry trends, market changes, and emerging tech. One of the main reasons as to why I reach out to fellow sport creatives online is to ask about the equipment they use or to see if they have any recommendations in terms of technology and things I could add to my list. By engaging with people in your field, you can stay ahead of the curve and evolve based on these industry standards.
So, now that we talked about some of the reasons why you should be connecting with others in your industry, let's discuss some helpful tips to ensure you're taking advantage of the new connections you're making. It's time to discuss some of the top networking tips for the sports industry!
Top Networking Tips for the Sports Industry
Be Authentic
If you take only one thing from this entire post, take this: be authentic. The best way to ensure that you're meeting the right people is by being genuine and sincere in your interactions with them. People really appreciate authenticity. Just like in life's social setting, by being yourself, you're increasing the chances of meeting the people that are like-minded and that will like you for who you are and for what you can provide.
Attend Sporting Events
Make sure that you're taking advantage of networking events, conferences, and workshops that are related to your industry. These are great for providing you with valuable opportunities to meet like-minded professionals and people who are just as passionate about sports as you may be.
Although professional events are a great tool for this, you can also simply attend sporting events, matches, and tournaments in more chill environments to make connections with people. In a more casual setting, you may feel less pressure to meet athletes, coaches, or other sport industry professionals that are in the same environment as you.
Take Advantage of Social Media
One of the greatest gifts (and curses) that we have in our generation is social media. LinkedIn is a great professional platform to ensure that you can interact with the people that are in your industry, but Instagram and TikTok are also great ways to find like-minded people and to connect with them.
Set Clear Goals
As with anything else in life, defining clear goals and objectives can be a really helpful tool to ensure that you have clarity when pursuing networking opportunities. Whether it's about finding mentors, securing a partnership, or simply exploring job opportunities, make sure that you know the reason why you're going out there!
Follow Up
One of the most powerful things that you can do after meeting someone is to follow up your initial connection with a message or email. Introduce yourself, express your appreciation for the conversation you had, and you can even suggest ways to stay in touch with this new connection.
Volunteer
Volunteering is not only a valuable way to network with others, but it also showcases your dedication to the sports community. Whether you offer your assistance at local sporting events or even tournaments, you can use that opportunity to connect with fellow people in your industry.
Join Sport Clubs or Organizations
If you're still in school, joining sport clubs and organizations are a great way to network with fellow sport enthusiasts and professionals who share your passion for sports. These spaces are great for brainstorming ideas, learning trends, or simply socializing with like-minded people.
